Pérez Prado Discography:
78rpm Singles

"Mambo del Fut Bol"
"Such A Night"
"Beautiful"
"Rhythm Sticks"

Recordings by Dámaso Pérez Prado, El Rey del Mambo.

Original country of first release as [noted]. In many cases other pressings also exist, as well as "white label" promos, etc.

Items in Red are on my Want List.

78rpm Records 1947-1959

10-inch mono recordings. Some dates are approximate. Only 78's whose existance can actually be verified are listed. Unless otherwise [noted], all RCA's are original US releases. However, corresponding releases from Canada, England (on RCA's HMV label), Mexico (on RCA's Mexicana label), and other countries may exist.

Many RCA 45s released through 1956 are also likely to have corresponding 78s with the prefix "20-" or "23-" instead of "45-," "47-," or "51-." Annotations on the label, such as Mambo, Baiao, Suby, Dengue or Chunga, indicate the dance step or rhythm of the song.

78rpm Singles - Cuba and Mexico

Prado recorded at least 24 songs between 1947 and 1949. Of these, 22 have been reissued on a CD called Kuba-Mambo (Tumbao Cuban Classics TCD-006). Others are included on various LPs such as Mambo Happy! (RCA Camden CAL-409) and Perez Prado & His Orchestra (Seeco LDS 047). Although the Tumbao liner notes say that these were "made in Cuba during the late 40s," musicologist Michael Macdonald-Ross claims that these were recorded in Mexico City by RCA during that period and probably released on their local Mexicana label. However, a correspondent from Peru reports the existance of a Cuban 78 with a similar early version of "Mambo No. 5," possibly from the mid-1940s.

Also, in February, 2000, I acquired a 78 on the Discos Cafamo label (below) which says "Recorded & Mfg. in Cuba" and includes two of the songs which are on the Kuba-Mambo CD. This suggests that Tumbao may be correct after all. It should be noted that some of the confusion arises from the fact that Prado often rerecorded his songs with different orchestrations and band members, both in Cuba and in Mexico. Unfortunately, there is not enough information available at the present time to completely sort-out this issue or to include complete catalogue numbers and side pairings.
